Police: 2 killed at Ohio nightclub

CINCINNATI — Two men were fatally shot early Monday at a Cincinnati nightclub that has been the site of other shootings.

Police said an off-duty Cincinnati officer working a security detail at the club heard shots ring out at about 2:30 a.m. and called for help. Police arrived at Annie's Entertainment Complex to find one man dead in the parking lot and another fatally wounded.

Sgt. Danita Kilgore said police were searching for a sport utility vehicle that sped off after the shootings. Police said several possible witnesses also fled.

Police didn't releaseother details, but the slain men were identified as Daunte Phillips, 23, and Marcus Mitchell, 21.

Two men were wounded in shootings at the club in June 2008. Last November, a Cincinnati police officer wounded a suspect who had shot at him after the officer responded to shots fired in the club's parking lot.

The club's owners had agreed to increase security earlier this year, hiring additional off-duty officers and screening for weapons. Police say the shootings all occurred after Sunday night rap/hip hop concerts that drew large crowds.

Police Capt. Doug Wiesman said the city could go after the club's dance hall and liquor licenses if the problem continues.

A lawyer for Annie's, Tim Burke, said the club's operators were stunned and felt they had been vigilant on security, using pat-downs and metal detectors. He said 1,100 people had been in the club Sunday night.

Burke said the club was cooperating with police and will continue to work with them on security concerns.
