Ohio State’s effort to trademark ‘OSU’ opposed by Oklahoma State

Buckeye Nation is in a battle for its namesake, or at least its abbreviation.

Ohio State University earlier this year filed to trademark the phrase "OSU" with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, CBS Sports reports.

But, Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma, plans to file a formal notice to oppose the request, according to The Columbus Dispatch. Oklahoma State has until the end of August to oppose Ohio State's trademark effort.

The acronym “OSU” does not belong to any one school right now. Instead, it is shared between colleges with usage agreements that also include Oregon State University, according to reports.

The existing agreement for “OSU” applies to sporting events and debate over the current concerns usage on apparel, CBS Sports reports.

Gary Shutt, Oklahoma State’s director of communications, told The Dispatch that Oklahoma State would work with Ohio State to negotiate joint use of “OSU” to make “sure our universities and our fans are best served.”
