Langenderfer out of GOP primary for Ohio house seat

XENIA — Saying it “wasn’t my time” and not being able to raise the financial or political capital needed, attorney John Langenderfer dropped out of the Republican March 6 primary for the 73rd District seat in the Ohio House of Representatives.

The now three-way GOP race left pits incumbent Jarrod Martin against Greene County Commissioner Rick Perales and Greene County Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Spicer. The Democratic primary is between Linda Borgert and Bill Conner.

“You require enough political capital, publicity and funds to make a real race and I don’t have that at this time,” Langenderfer said Wednesday. “I certainly need to spend more time getting to know people in the community.”

Langenderfer told fellow Republicans he was dropping out at a county party meeting last week and posted his decision on Facebook. As a relative political newcomer, the treasurer of the Greene County GOP would have run into the deep pocket books of his opponents.

Martin is a two-time incumbent who did not file a campaign finance report for the last reporting period. In July, Martin reported $7,441 cash on hand and a $21,000 debt. Perales has $45,452 available, and Spicer’s campaign has $6,476 on hand after he gave himself a $10,000 loan.

“I didn’t have the finances to compete with the other candidates,” said Langenderfer, adding he plans to run for office again. “I am not endorsing any of the three but I look forward to helping whoever the nominee is in the general election.”
