Previous bus crashes of note in U.S.

  • July 27, 2013: Three people died as a church bus crashed in Indianapolis after coming from a youth camping trip in Michigan. The crash also injured 33 other passengers.
  • March 2, 2007: Members of the Bluffton University baseball team were involved in a bus crash in Atlanta when the bus carrying them exited a HOV lane at highway speed, crashed into a concrete barrier wall, jumped a bridge and fell onto Interstate 75. The driver, his wife and five members of the baseball team were killed.
  • May 14, 1988: Twenty-seven people were killed when a wrong-way drunk driver slammed into a church bus in rural Carrollton, Ky.
  • Aug. 28, 1987: A bus carrying handicapped children was hit broadside by a flatbed truck in rural Bronson, Fla. The collision ripped open the bus and knocked it off its chassis. Six people were killed, including the driver of the bus.
  • Feb. 28, 1958: Described as the worst school bus accident in U.S. history, 26 students and the driver were killed when the bus struck a vehicle and plunged into the Big Sandy River in Prestonburg, Ky.
