Runaway Trenton teen told school she couldn’t live with guardian

Two days after she was reported missing, Loretta Norvell, 17, left a voicemail for an Edgewood High School counselor saying she was “OK and ran away because she could no longer deal with living with” her aunt, who is her legal guardian.

That was one of the reasons the Trenton Police Department sought a search warrant for a home in the 4800 block of Caprice Drive in Middletown, according to court documents obtained by this news outlet.

The Trenton teenager missing for two months was found safe Tuesday hiding in the closet of that Middletown home.

Nina Norvell Berry, Norvell’s aunt and legal guardian, made a missing person report of Jan. 15, 2017, stating the teen ran away sometime overnight from their home on Dartmouth Street in Trenton, according to the warrant obtained by this news outlet.

Berry told police the girl ran away to be with her boyfriend, after Berry made them break-up in October 2016.

When Trenton police searched the home in Middletown on Tuesday they were looking for electronics that linked Norvell to that residence.

They recovered three cell phones and were “surprised” to find Norvell hiding in a closet. She was charged with unruly and placed with Butler County Children Services, officials said.

Repeated calls to Bill Morrison, director of Butler County Children Services, seeking comment on the case and Norvell’s well-being were not returned this week.

The homeowners on Caprice Drive — Lucinda and Robert Bryant, both 47 — were charged with falsification, obstruction of justice, and interference with custody, according to the Trenton Police Chief Arthur Scott.

Scott said the teen was not held against her will and was not kidnapped, but the couple was “hiding information” from police. He said Norvell was “disappointed” to be found because she wanted to remain hidden for a few more months until her 18th birthday.

Scott said Children Services and Trenton police have been called to the Dartmouth Street home numerous times.

Trenton police were called there 38 times in the past seven years, according to police reports reviewed by this news outlet. The calls included missing/found child, child well-being checks, domestic disturbances and abused/neglected child.
