Southwest to route all Dayton flights to Chicago

Starting in April, all Southwest Airlines flights from Dayton will be Chicago-bound, according to a media release from the city of Dayton.

Southwest Airlines will shift all of its Dayton service to fly to its hub at Chicago Midway International Airport.

Southwest’s daily flights to three non-stop destinations — Baltimore, Denver and Orlando — will end after April 11. Instead, the airline will provide three daily flights to Midway International Airport

Dayton International Airport officials said the move will give area travelers greater access to more destinations.

From Midway, passengers will be able to connect to any of 243 daily direct flights to 62 U.S. cities and 11 daily direct flights to eight international destinations.

Southwest’s Dayton to Midway service will be provided on Boeing 737-700 aircraft with 143 seats.

“We are excited about the opportunity this presents Dayton travelers,” said Terrence Slaybaugh, Dayton International Airport director, in a statement. “This shift in service will provide even more connectivity to more destinations than Southwest currently offers from Dayton. Passengers will have greater accessibility to many more flights, getting them to more destinations. Because of this, passengers will be less likely to become stranded due to unforeseen cancellations of their flight.”

Historically, Chicago has been one of Dayton’s highest priced markets, but this move from Southwest will aim to create a competitive pricing environment with United Airlines and American Airlines, which currently offer non-stop flights from Dayton to Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

With three airlines providing twelve daily flights to Chicago, the competition is set to drive down prices and offer some relief to Dayton travelers, officials said.
