2nd half touchdowns push Alter over McNicholas

Two second half touchdowns led the Alter High School football team to a 35-27 win over McNicholas on Saturday.

Alter had a three-yard touchdown run by Danny Smith in the third quarter and a 79-yard run by Malik Zaire in the fourth quarter.

Zaire was 8-of-14 passing for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed 13 times for 176 yards and one touchdown. Zaire threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Connor Vannatta in the first quarter, and a 16-yard touchdown to Jordan George in the second quarter.

Tommy Ruff rushed 12 times for 102 yards. Danny Smith had 15 rushes for 87 yards and one touchdown. Alter out-gained McNicholas 607-409.

McNicholas’ Austin Ernst was 20-of-31 passsing for 273 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed 13 times for 88 yards and one touchdown.

Alter (6-0) hadn’t given up more than a touchdown scoring in a game since a 49-21 win in the second week against Guerin Catholic.

Boys soccer

Wayne 3, Troy 2: Nick Yahna scored on a header off a corner corner kick with 42 seconds left. Marquis Payton also scored for Wayne (9-3-2). Troy (5-3-5) led the game 2-1 at one point.

Beavercreek 1, Walnut Hills 0: Tristan Lyle scored the only goal of the game off a throw-in from Paul Ramos. Keepers Justin Saliba and MacKenzie Stamper split the shutout for Beavercreek (12-1-2).

Carroll 4, LaSalle 1: Zach Zwiesler, John Rutan and Vonne Byrd each had a goal and an assist for Carroll (10-0-4). Trae’ Collins had a goal.

Bellbrook 2, Tippecanoe 0: Eric Lynch scored both goals for Bellbrook (13-0). Keeper Jacob Niemeier had three saves and his ninth shutout.

Girls Soccer

Wayne 3, Upper Arlington 1: Cara Rose, Baylee Houck and Kiersten Hook each had a goal for Wayne (4-9-1).

Lehman Catholic 4, Catholic Central 2: Jenna Kronenberger scored for Lehman off a corner kick. Madeline Franlkin had two goals for the Cavaliers (12-1), ranked second in the area Division III poll.

Brooke Maletic and Paige Lewis scored goals for Catholic Central (12-2).

Girls tennis

Division I sectional at Centerville: Aundrea Busse of Springboro defeated teammate Julie Brockman in the singles final 6-3, 7-5. Paige Silverberg of Lakota East finished third. Busse defeated Allison Bendel of Fairmont in the semifinal, and Mikala Hindenlang of Miamisburg in the quarter final.

Tori Turner and Nicole Soutar of Lakota West took first in doubles defeating Taylor Holden and Maddy Mueck of Lakota East 6-1, 6-4. Turner and Soutar defeated Leeah Floyd and Haley Harrison of Lakota East 7-3, 3-6, 6-0 in the semifinal.

Division II sectional at Centerville: Rheanna Morehart of Miami Valley won the singles title defeating Waverly Wituski of Alter 6-3, 6-0. Jackie White of Oakwood took third place. Morehart defeated Abby Cramer of Valley View in the semifinal, and Ashley Huffman of Chaminade Julienne in the quarter final.

In the doubles final, Natalie Allen and Brooke Sandridge of CJ defeated Megan Connelly and Annie Lutz of Oakwood 6-4, 6-4. Rachel Heinz and Megan Yates of Bellbrook took third.

Division I sectional at Troy: Taylor Culbertson of Tecumseh defeated Akilah Parker of Northmont 6-0, 6-1 in the singles final. Ivy Smith and Amber Smith of Troy defeated Farah Chaudhry and Kristin Campbell of Springfield 6-4, 6-1 in the doubles final.

Division II sectional at Troy: Sierra Nellessen of Tippecanoe defeated Kenzie Detrick of Springfield Shawnee 6-0, 6-0 in the singles final.
