Central State University has turned to one of its own to be athletic director. Jahan Culbreath, previously the Marauders’ interim AD and a 1992 CSU graduate, was appointed to the position on Tuesday.

“I am excited about the opportunity to build on the foundation and legacy in place,” Culbreath said in a statement.

“We have a strong program and I look forward to bringing my energy and enthusiasm to serve the university.”

Culbreath was named CSU’s interim AD last June. He succeeds former NFL standout Kellen Winslow, whose contract as CSU’s athletic director was not renewed. Winslow held the position since 2008.

Culbreath has a wide range of management experience. He has served as an assistant athletic director of development, liaison for football operations and also has been CSU’s longtime head men’s and women’s track and field and cross country coach.

He has served in administrative positions at the University of Minnesota, Reebok International Limited, Stoughton, Mass., and Kenny Bee, Inc., of New York.

“Mr. Culbreath brings a wealth of expertise in athletic leadership, athletic student development and philanthropy,” said CSU President Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond in a statement.

Culbreath will help in the upgrading of the CSU football program. Next fall the Marauders will be an associate member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The SIAC, made up of historically black universities, is an NCAA Division II affiliate.
