Whitecaps 3, Dragons 2
Highlights: Dayton loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Ronald Torreyes watched strike three cross the plate. The pitch ended the night for the Dragons. Tucker Barnhart was 3-for-4 with three singles and drove in Donald Lutz for an RBI in the third inning.
Turning point: West Michigan sluggers Steven Moya and Curt Casali hit back-to-back solo home runs in the second inning to give the Whitecaps an early lead. Josh Ashenbrenner’s RBI single in the fourth gave them all the runs they needed.
Pitching story: Daniel Corcino suffered his third loss in his last four starts. He pitched six innings and allowed seven hits, three earned runs and a walk while striking out seven. Luca Panerati pitched the final three innings and didn’t allow a hit.
On deck: Right-hander Josh Smith (9-6, 3.10) makes his 21st start of the season today for Dayton, which begins a seven-game road trip at Lake County. Smith faces lefty Kirk Wetmore (3-0, 6.21).
