Overcoming Tweet? Forget about it

By Marc Pendleton

Just about the time we think all is well and encouraging with the Ohio State University football program, along comes Cardale Jones. As if we needed reminding, the freshman from Cleveland assured us that the universe is not ready for teen Twitter accounts.

You didn’t know of the promising quarterback as Urban Meyer’s initial season with the Buckeyes unfolded; you sure do now. Dumbing down attending class as pointless because he’s majoring in football tends to launch the Tweet Heard Round the World.

I don’t know whether to shake a bony finger at this goofball or give him a pretend hug. A lot of work needs to be done with CJ. None of it has to do with his moving up the depth chart from the No. 3 QB.

At the very least, there’s likely one less Twitter account among the Buckeyes. Meyer said all the right things after huddling with Jones. He’s good at that; way too experienced, also.

That’s the unforgiving quality about sports. Just because a practice, game or season went well doesn’t mean it can’t all blow up. All it takes is a late night on Lane Avenue or a whiff of burnt leaves. You’re young, away from home, have plenty of idle time and inquisitive. If not grounded, that’s a bad combo. The LSU and Missouri football programs know all about that most recently.

Here’s what I say to Cardale: You can’t handle technology.

OSU football will survive this, but Jones won’t. That kind of juvenile moment has a way of hounding you for the rest of your career. The good citizens at Lansing, Madison, Ann Arbor and everywhere else the Buckeyes play will see to that should he ever step into his intended limelight.

I pity the fool.
