Pitching points Dragons to win

DAYTON — The conundrum the Dayton Dragons’ season has become continued Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field.

One of the better staff pitching performances of the season paced a 6-1 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

The victory on a 91-degree day before 8,511 fans was in stark contrast to a 14-1 loss Friday night followed by an 8-1 defeat to Hot Rods Saturday.

The Dragons are 26-37 in the Class A Midwest League with wins in five of their last seven games.

“This is what happens when we don’t walk people and throw strikes,” Dragons manager Delino DeShields said. “All three guys we used threw the ball well and we made the most of the hits we got.”

Radhames Quezada (4-6) picked up his second win in seven days over Bowling Green. He beat the Hot Rods last Monday, 6-2.

Sunday he worked six inning allowing one run on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. In his last 16 innings, Quezada has given up three runs, all on solo homers.

Sunday’s solo homer came in the top of the sixth inning when Josh Sale took a first-pitch fastball deep to right field. Sale was the 17th player taken overall in the 2010 draft by Tampa Bay.

The only time Quezada was in trouble was in the top of the third when Bowling Green loaded the bases with two outs. Sale came to the plate and flied out to left fielder Juan Silva.

From that juncture, Quezada retired 10 of the next 12 batters with Sale’s homer his only slip.

Mike Dennhardt came on for two innings and continued his outstanding relief work. In the seventh, he had two men on with one out and retired the side on a strikeout and fly ball.

In the eighth, the first Hot Rods hitter singled. Dennhardt, a New Jersey native who played at Boston College, again got out of trouble with two strikeouts and a fielder’s choice.

In his last 13 1/3 innings, Dennhardt has given up seven hits and no earned runs with one walk and seven strikeouts. His earned-run average is 1.53.

Ryan Kemp came on in the ninth to retire the side on two flyouts and a strikeout. Bowling Green was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Dragons got single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings and two in sixth.

Catcher Yovan Gonzalez drove in two runs. Left fielder Juan Silva had two doubles, scored twice, had two stolen bases and drove in a run.

Selsky rooting for Arizona

Outfielder Steve Selsky is the only player on the Dragons roster with his alma mater in the College World Series.

Arizona, where he played for three years, defeated St. John’s 7-4 Saturday to qualify for its first trip to Omaha since 2004. The Wildcats are 43-17.

“I’ve got bragging rights,” he said. “I’ve been lucky to be able to watch all the games they’ve played here in the clubhouse on TV because of the time difference. I hope I get to watch them in the series if game times work out.”

Selsky could have been a part of that team had he decided not to sign with the Cincinnati Reds last summer.

“My sister asked me about that,” he said. “It would have been great to be in the series if I had stayed. But would I rather be a professional player? Yeah. You have to take that opportunity when it comes.”
