CINCINNATI —
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton threw a perfect pass and wide receiver A.J. Green ran an excellent route, but head coach Marvin Lewis said there was another player responsible for the 56-yard touchdown on the team’s fifth play from scrimmage in Sunday’s 31-13 win against the New York Giants.
“We had a guy make a big play that none of you know about,” Lewis told the media during his Monday press conference.
“Other than the thrower and the catcher, there was a big play made on that play and it was an unscripted one,” Lewis continued. “Those are things that you have to have happen if everybody just keeps doing their thing.”
The play Lewis was referring to was made by wide receiver Brandon Tate. After coming in motion from left to right, Tate recognized a blitz by Giants safety Antrel Rolle and cut him before continuing his route. Rolle got back to his feet and was just a tick late in getting to Dalton before he heaved the ball.
“(Tate) picked up a blitz that we didn’t really expect,” offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth said. “That really made that entire play possible.”
It ended up being the Bengals’ longest play from scrimmage since Green’s 57-yard TD catch Oct. 14 in Cleveland.
Going Green
Not only did A.J. Green’s 56-yard touchdown pass tie him with T.J. Houshmandzadeh for the franchise record of most consecutive games (eight) with a touchdown in a single season, it kept him among the NFL leaders in active streaks.
Only Houston’s Arian Foster has a longer current streak with 11. The last time Foster did not score a TD was the 20-19 win against the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium on Dec. 11, 2011.
Carl Pickens owns the Bengals franchise record with 10 consecutive games with a TD, a streak that spanned the final five games of 2004 and the first five of 2005.
Cook coming
Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said injured center Kyle Cook continues to progress and both sides remain hopeful Cook can return to action this season.
“Kyle will be back in his rehab mode this week, and it’s just a matter now of how he gets back to functionality,” Lewis said. “We can’t put a timetable on anatomy. Kyle is chomping at the bit to have the opportunity to play, so I know he’ll work extremely hard at it. Hopefully it will progress pretty quickly.”
Cook injured his ankle in the third preseason game against Green Bay and was placed on the new Injured Reserve list with the designation to return. Once he returns to practice, he will have to be activated within 21 days or be shelved for the season.
Lewis also said safety Reggie Nelson (hamstring) and wide receiver Marvin Jones (knee), the two players who missed Sunday’s game with injuries, have “iffy chances” of playing in Kansas City.
“They’re progressing well,” Lewis said. “Knock on wood, we’re in pretty good shape health-wise.”
Roster move
The Bengals signed linebacker Ben Jacobs to the practice squad Monday and waived offensive tackle Jeff Adams.
A 6-foot-4, 243-pound first-year player from Fresno State, Jacobs entered the NFL in 2011 as a college free agent with the Cleveland Browns. He was released from the Browns’ practice squad Oct. 9.
