Bowling: Sisters win tournament titles

By Debbie Juniewicz

Bowling bragging rights are not easy to come by in the Cummings household.

For now, sisters Haley and Kayla both have a share as Haley, 15, won the junior girls and Kayla, 19, won the major girls scratch titles at the Greater Dayton United States Bowling Congress youth singles tournament at Royal Z Lanes in Wilmington. Haley and Kayla finished the tournament with scores of 658 and 585, respectively.

“There’s a lot of good competition in this area,” Haley said. “It’s not easy to win a tournament like this.”

But the Huber Heights sisters have been bowling and winning for as long as they can remember. Neither knows for sure how many city titles they have collected but both know that they are better bowlers because they have each other.

“It’s not always easy when you have an older sibling who is so good,” Haley said. “But it really does help you. I’ve learned a lot from her.”

Haley would watch intently while Kayla had her bowling lessons when they were younger. It paid off for the little sister.

“Haley is a much better bowler than I was when I was a sophomore in high school,” Kayla said. “She has a lot more experience.”

The sisters bowled together on the Wayne High School team last season — Haley in her first year and Kayla in her final one.

“It was actually really fun, we got really close during the high school season,” Kayla said.

They maintained the highest averages in the Greater Western Ohio Conference last season, Kayla with a 221.4 and Haley with 214.3. Little sister had a slight advantage in the high series with 508 to her big sister’s 507.

“I loved leading the conference with Kayla,” Haley said. “It was so much fun.”

Now, high school bowling is Haley’s domain as Kayla has made the move to collegiate bowling as a freshman at Wright State University.

“It’s a big change bowling in college,” Kayla said. “I always felt like I was No. 1 when I was in high school and I’m not any more.”

Lane conditions are also considerably more difficult as the high school house shot has been replaced by a sport shot at the college level. The Wright State women’s team is currently ranked fifth in the country by Collegebowling.com.

And Kayla’s bowling success continues to inspire her little sister.

“I feel like I want to live up to her name,” Haley said.
