FAIRBORN —

If Wright State guard Joe Bramanti doesn’t play like a freshman at times, it’s because he really isn’t.

The Andover, Mass., native spent a year after high school at a prep school in New Hampshire, Brewster Academy, before signing with the Raiders last spring. That helped him on the court and in the classroom and even prepared him for living away from home. Then he enrolled at Wright State in June had an entire summer to get to know his new Raider teammates.

“I feel like I’m 10 times a better player because coach (Billy) Donlon is a great skill worker,” Bramanti said. “I’ve been here since June 11, and working all the way through summer really helped.”

Bramanti drew his second start of the season in Saturday’s 66-57 victory over Morehead State at the Nutter Center as the Raiders improved to 5-2. He also started the season opener at Idaho.

Bramanti’s numbers against Morehead don’t stand out at a quick glance: 3 points on 3-of-4 shooting at the foul line and 1 rebound. But he also had 3 assists and 0 turnovers in a season-high 20 minutes against an intense Morehead defense.

Going into tonight’s 7 p.m. game at Bowling Green (3-4), Bramanti is averaging 1.1 points, 1.1 assists and 1.1 rebounds in 13.4 minutes per game. He has played double-figure minutes in all but one game (North Carolina A&T).

“I definitely feel comfortable,” he said. “I’ve been working my butt off since I got here in June. It feels really good to start, but all I’m really focused on is the team. I want the team to win. We came out and played a good game (Saturday), and everyone contributed.”

Most of Bramanti’s contributions come on the defensive end. He said that’s always been a strength for him.

“I’m a combo guard,” he said. “I play any position you want me to play. I play the best defense I can and try to facilitate offensively. I can do a lot of things.

“At Brewster, I always guarded the best guy on the opposing team. I definitely took pride in that, going from high school to prep school to here.”

Bramanti has committed just two turnovers in his last 60 minutes on the court.

“Coach emphasizes the low turnovers, and I was always a guy who wanted to play freely,” he said. “If I turned it over, just get back, play defense and get stops. Now that I’m not turning it over as much, I’m going to fit in better and better.”

Dixon’s performance: Junior guard Miles Dixon had a similar stat line to Bramanti’s in Saturday’s win: 4 points, 5 assists, 0 turnovers in 22 minutes.

“He’s going to look at his stat line and see 4 points, but if you get 5 assists and 0 turnovers against that type of heat, that’s good basketball,” Donlon said. “He’ll have nights where he scores 15. But he’s buying in to what we’re doing because he had 5 assists and 0 turnovers. That’s a big key for us.”
