Our reporter's picks in tight A-10 race

By Doug Harris

The Atlantic will release its coaches and media preseason poll and preseason all-conference picks today. Expect a riveting league race. Out of 16 teams, 10 won at least 20 games last season, including Dayton.

Here’s my ballot with records from last year and the lowdown on each team:

1. VCU (29-7). Defending Colonial Athletic Association tournament champs return all but one key player.

2. Saint Louis (26-8). Coach Rick Majerus is taking leave of absence for health reasons, but interim coach Jim Crews will have four of five starters back.

3. Saint Joseph’s (20-14). Hawks return every significant player from last season.

4. Butler (22-15). Bulldogs had rare down season (for them) after two straight NCAA tourney final trips. Transfer Rotnei Clarke, who averaged 15 points at Arkansas, will help.

5. UMass (25-12). Minutemen have point guard Chaz Williams and most of his supporting cast back from NIT semifinal team.

6. Dayton (20-13). Josh Benson and Matt Kavanaugh provide sturdy inside presence to go with star point guard Kevin Dillard.

7. Temple (24-8). Perimeter players Juan Fernandez and Ramone Moore are gone, but Owls have averaged 26.3 wins the last three years.

8. Xavier (23-13). Shocking to have Musketeers so low, but all five starters are gone and two of four players from top-15 recruiting class are ineligible.

9. La Salle (21-13). Every key player but one is back, and Explorers went 9-7 in league last season.

10. Richmond (16-16). Traditional league title contenders will be better after off year, but record may not show it.

11. St. Bonaventure (20-12). League coaches are relieved to see Andrew Nicholson graduate, but defending A-10 tourney champs might surprise.

12. Charlotte (13-17). Final season in A-10 before jumping to Conference USA to accommodate football.

13. Rhode Island (7-24). New coach Dan Hurley led Wagner to 25-6 record last season.

14. Fordham (10-19). Coach Tom Pecora is making progress, but it’s hard to see evidence of it in rugged A-10.

Preseason all-league (ranked 1st through 15th): 1. Kevin Dillard, Dayton. 2. Chaz Williams, UMass. 3. Darius Theus, VCU. 4. Chris Gaston, Fordham. 5. Kwamain Mitchell, St. Louis. 6. Langston Galloway, St. Joe’s. 7. Chris Braswell, Charlotte. 8. Ramon Galloway, La Salle. 9. Andrew Smith, Butler. 10. Juvonte Reddic, VCU. 11. Carl Jones, St. Joe’s. 12. Cody Ellis, St. Louis. 13. Darien Brothers, Richmond. 14. Josh Benson, Dayton. 15. Khalif Wyatt, Temple.
