Raiders struggling from long range at home

By David Jablonski

Staff Writer

FAIRBORN —

For whatever reason, the rims at the Nutter Center haven’t been kind to Wright State this season. Its four worst 3-point shooting performances of the season, in which it has combined shoot 10-of-65 (15 percent) from long range, have all come at home.

The Raiders managed to win the first three of those against Miami (3-of-13), Mount St. Joseph (1-of-15) and Milwaukee (4-of-18), but they couldn’t overcome their 2-of-19 performance against Illinois-Chicago, losing 55-49 on Saturday.

“We’re a capable shooting team, but we’re not lights out by any means,” coach Billy Donlon said. “When you’re just a capable shooting team, you’re going to have nights when you don’t shoot it as well. In a perfect world, I would have liked to have seen us maybe be 2-of-12 from the 3 and maybe take five more two-point shots, but I’m not really down on them.”

That’s because Donlon said the Raiders played a great game on the defensive end.

“We did a lot of positive things,” Donlon said, “so it’s hard to go in there and just blast them with the way we played.”

There’s no doubt the Raiders’ confidence has to be hurting going into a 7 p.m. game Wednesday against Detroit at the Nutter Center. The Raiders beat Detroit 64-62 just nine days ago, but the Titans were playing their third game in five days.

Detroit (13-8) has played one game since. It’ll be rested and ready, hoping to turn the tables on the Raiders (14-7). Both teams are 5-3 in the Horizon League, tied for second with Green Bay. Valparaiso (6-1) leads the conference.

Wright State has lost its last two games to Youngstown State and Illinois-Chicago after starting 5-1 in league play.

“There’s no question our confidence is shaken because of the way we lost,” Donlon said. “If we have a bad night defensively, their confidence is never shaken. When we beat Milwaukee (despite the offense struggles), I felt that was on me. Our zone offense wasn’t good. I feel like against Youngstown and UIC both, we’ve gotten incredibly good shots and just haven’t made them.”

The Raiders rank seventh in the Horizon League in 3-point shooting (32 percent). They were better early in the season, topping 35 percent in seven of the first 12 games. They’ve done that twice in the last nine games.

Donlon said he talks in timeouts about shooting fewer 3-pointers if they’re having a rough night.

“There was another game at home where I said, ‘We’re not making 3s. Let’s drive the ball,’” Donlon said. “That’s a little harder to do when the other team’s in zone. If you get a good look in the zone, then you’ve got to shoot it because then if you tell them not to shoot, then kids — and rightfully so — will say, ‘Should I shoot this one?’ and then they’re not focused on their shot.”
