FAIRBORN —

An eight-day break was supposed to help Wright State rest and heal in preparation for the final four games of the regular season. Instead, the Raiders will play at Cleveland State at 7 p.m. Wednesday without two of their best players in the lineup.

Wright State coach Billy Donlon said junior forward Cole Darling, the team’s leading scorer, will miss at least the next three games after injuring his foot in practice Sunday. Also, sophomore point guard Reggie Arceneaux will not play tonight as he continues to recover from a concussion suffered in the team’s last game, a 68-61 loss to Valparaiso at the Nutter Center on Feb. 12.

It’s a tough break for a team playing for one of the top four seeds in the Horizon League tournament, but this team overcame a rash of injuries in November and December, and Donlon is confident it can do it again.

“I feel good about our team,” Donlon said. “We’ve played numbers all year. We’ve played without Cole before. He’s certainly been our most consistent player. I don’t want to act like we’re not going to miss him. We are where we are because Cole Darling has been an all-conference player, but we’ve had other guys step up at that position and do good things.”

Darling, who missed four games early in the season with a shoulder injury, something he has battled ever since, averages 11.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Donlon said they will know more about Darling’s status for the rest of the season later this week. The injury occurred when Darling landed awkwardly.

Donlon hopes Darling gets consideration for the All-Horizon League teams even if he doesn’t play again this season.

“He’s averaging 11 a game, and getting 11 a game on our team is like getting 16 or 17 on other teams,” Donlon said. “I think you have to look at his stats a little differently. He’s had a great year.”

This will be the first game Arceneaux has missed in his career. He started all season until Joe Bramanti took over the starting role for the last three games. Arceneaux averages 9.7 points per game.

Last week, three days after the Valparaiso loss, Arceneaux posted his injury news on Twitter, writing “(It’s) never a great feeling being concussed.”

Wright State (17-9, 8-5) is in fourth place going into tonight’s game, a half game behind Green Bay (15-12, 9-5). Valparaiso (20-7, 10-3) and Detroit (18-9, 10-4) have the inside track on getting the top two seeds and the double-bye into the conference tournament semifinals.
