Q&A with UD coach Archie Miller

By Doug Harris

Q. What was the biggest surprise of your first year?

A. I think the biggest surprise for me in being a head coach was the constant time pressures. I talked to my brother (Arizona coach Sean Miller) this summer and said, “It’s such a grind mentally and physically.” He said, “The thing you’ll realize early on as you get older is that the most precious thing you have is time and everyone wants it. At the end of the day, you have to figure out how to balance that.”

My first year here was an eye opening experience just in the demands. There’s a lot going on that’s not just basketball. There’s the boosters, there’s the media, there’ the travel, there’s the recruiting. At one point in time (as an assistant), it used to be, there’s basketball, there’s your team, there’s recruiting and your family. Now, it’s ever-evolving and there’s a lot more to it. Getting into year two and having a greater understanding of that is helpful.

Q. How do you take losses?

A. Horrible. The worst of the worst. … The first loss, you have no understanding of the pressure that’s put on you. You take everything personal. You take every play, every referee’s call personal. And the losses, in some cases, can grind not only you, but the people around you if you’re not careful. I don’t handle them well at all. And most importantly, even with this year’s team, I say to myself all the time, you have to be a little more patient. Younger guys are going to make mistakes. But losing to me was the hardest thing.

Q. Do you sleep well during the season?

A. I don’t need much sleep, but I don’t sleep anyway. Once the season happens, it’s irregular in terms of being able to fall asleep when you want to fall asleep. But I think that’s part of that territory.

Q. Does any coach sleep like a baby?

A. No. You’re constantly worried. It’s that worrisome mentality. Even if you’re doing well, you worry, are we doing too well? You second guess everything.
