Wright State’s Sledge suspended two games

FAIRBORN —

Wright State announced Wednesday that 6-foot-9 sophomore forward Tavares Sledge has been suspended two games for “violation of team policy.”

Sledge will miss Friday’s season opener at Idaho and the second game at Eastern Illinois on Tuesday. He’s expected to return for the third game, the home opener against North Carolina A&T on Nov. 16.

“The biggest thing is the life learning part of it,” said coach Billy Donlon, who wouldn’t comment on what Sledge did to get suspended. “People make mistakes. If you really love the people and care about the people you’re involved with, you’re going to give them another opportunity and help them learn and grow from the mistakes.”

Sledge played 11 minutes and had 4 points in the exhibition win over Central State on Friday.

Sledge appeared in 31 games last season, starting two. He averaged 4.1 points and 2.8 rebounds.

“I think we’re prepared to move forward for these two games without him,” Donlon said. “Idaho has great size. In terms of depth, we’ll have to do some different things if they choose to play big. We have one true center now (6-10 AJ Pacher).

“They’re big. They score inside. They’re very efficient offensively. Kyle Barone, their (6-10) starting center, is an all-league power in the WAC. He’s going to play for money some day. I don’t know if he’s an NBA player, but he’s definitely going to be a very big player in Europe.”
