Dayton routed by San Diego

By Chris Moorman

SAN DIEGO —

The University of Dayton football team suffered a 32-point loss to Pioneer Football League rival San Diego Saturday night, breaking Dayton’s three-game winning streak.

The Flyers (4-5, 3-3) fell 41-9 on the road against the Toreros with San Diego’s offense racking up nearly 600 yards. San Diego junior quarterback Mason Mills set a school and league record with 511 yards passing, completing 31 of 41 passes for four touchdowns and two interceptions.

“I thought we did get some pressure on him, but he would avoid it and extend plays,” Dayton coach Rick Chamberlin said after the game. “He wasn’t holding on to it too long because when his receivers were going deep he got it out of his hands pretty fast and put it right on the money.

“I was a little surprised. I didn’t think he had that strong of an arm. I thought he was a very good 20-yard passer … But, those deep balls, he really showed me something tonight.”

San Diego (5-3, 4-1) was 6-of-12 on third downs, making the Flyers defense stay on the field longer and eventually led to touchdowns.

“That was the tale of the game,” Chamberlin said. “We’d play well for a couple plays and then we’d get them in a third down and they’d make the catch or we wouldn’t execute. San Diego will do that to you. They’ll move you around, give you some formations that’ll get you out of sync there. On third down plays, you’ve got to make the play.”

Dayton, which has been riddled with injury problems for most the season, had six players come out of Saturday night’s game due to injury.

Redshirt freshman Connor Kacsor, who had rushed for 100-yards in three straight games, was forced out of the game in the first half with a shoulder injury after rushing for 55 yards on five carries.

UD also had one of its co-captains go down in the third quarter when redshirt senior linebacker Colin Monnier had to be helped off the field after suffering a leg injury while making a tackle.

“It was one of those nights,” Chamberlin said. “It seemed like they just kept coming.”

Kacsor is “highly questionable” for UD’s next game against Drake on Saturday, Chamberlin said.

Dayton garnered just 263 yards of offense, including just 88 passing, after putting up more than 400 yards in each of its last three games.
