Northmont grad lauded for punting

By Sean McClelland

Staff Writer

Most college punters go their entire careers without the recognition that came Michael Snyder’s way for his performance last Saturday.

The redshirt freshman from Northmont High School was named OhioCollegeFootball.com FCS/Division II special teams player of the week for helping Ohio Dominican pin a 44-21 setback on No. 9-ranked Ashland.

Snyder had his best game, placing all five of his punts inside the 20-yard line, including two downed at the 5 and 6. He averaged 45 yards, and a 52-yarder was the second-longest of his young career.

Snyder is averaging 40.7 yards per punt, third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference, and has placed nine of 19 kicks inside the 20.

• Michigan receiver Roy Roundtree (Trotwood-Madison), a fifth-year senior, is still looking for a breakout game in his final season.

Roundtree, who gets another chance today at home against Illinois, recently spoke of how his conditioning had suffered due to a knee injury that required minor arthroscopic surgery in August and kept him out of practice for three weeks.

“Man, it was like I really wasn’t in shape like I was in the summer,” Roundtree told MLive.com.

He used Michigan’s bye week to catch up, focusing on acceleration and staying after practice for extra running with the strength coach.

Roundtree, who has 10 catches for 95 yards through five games, had been hoping to bounce back after seeing his reception total dip from 72 to 19 last season. His best game has been a three-catch, 30-yard effort against Notre Dame. Two of those grabs resulted in first downs.

• Michigan State redshirt freshman defensive back R.J. Williamson (Dunbar) saw his most extensive playing time Saturday against Indiana. He began playing all defensive downs at free safety midway through the first quarter and finished with a team-high nine tackles (seven solo) and a pass breakup. He made two tackles as a gunner in punt coverage.

• Senior outside linebacker Matt Cantrell (Northmont) and junior safety Taylor Briggs (Franklin) are keys to an Otterbein defense ranked second in the Ohio Athletic Conference behind Mount Union. Otterbein held its first three opponents to 10 points or fewer and takes a 5-0 record into today’s game against Heidelberg.

• Cincinnati State sophomore soccer player Justin Mitchell (Carroll) scored twice in a 3-2 overtime win over Ancilla on Sunday, increasing his team-leading goal total to 11. He assisted on the game-winner.

Katie Kessler (Springboro) and Andrea Kelsey (Fairmont) are part of a Wofford College women’s track and field team that’s been honored for posting the third-highest grade-point average (3.53) in the country, behind only Duke and San Francisco. Kessler (4.0 GPA) runs middle distance, Kelsey (3.8) long distance.

Alter grads Catherine Crisler, a senior at Loyola of Chicago, Rebecca Esselstein, a sophomore at the Air Force Academy, and Olivia Albers, a freshman at Dayton, are competing in the prestigious pre-national cross country races at Sawyer Park in Louisville today.
