Perhaps some time off will be a good thing for Miami University’s men’s basketball team.

The RedHawks (3-5), coming off last Saturday’s 83-61 setback at Dayton, have suffered three straight road losses and don’t play again until next Wednesday at Wright State.

“Hopefully it’s a good time for an 11-day break,” MU coach John Cooper said. “We’ll see when we come back off of it how well we play. Then I’ll let you know.”

WSU is 6-3 and has one more game before facing Miami at the Nutter Center, traveling to Hofstra on Saturday afternoon.

Here are a few statistics to consider in regard to the RedHawks:

• They are scoring 63.9 points per game and allowing an average of 72.8.

• They are getting outrebounded by an average margin of 37.2 to 28.6.

• They are shooting 40.4 percent from the floor. Opponents are shooting 50.1 percent.

• They are shooting 33.1 percent from 3-point range. Opponents are shooting 40.7 percent.

• They are shooting 70.0 percent from the foul line. Opponents are shooting 63.5 percent.

• The five teams they have lost to are a combined 31-15 (Louisville 8-1, Dayton 7-2, North Carolina State 6-2, Evansville 5-4, IPFW 5-6).

• Through Monday, the three teams they’ve beaten were a combined 9-15 (William & Mary 6-3, James Madison 3-6, Grambling State 0-6).

Women’s basketball

The RedHawks are 5-4 and heading to Chicago State on Sunday at 3 p.m. After that, they’ll play Creighton and Nevada at the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico, on Dec. 21-22.

MU’s next home game is Jan. 17 against the Ohio Bobcats.

Senior guard Courtney Osborn leads Miami with a 19.3 scoring average. She has 1,729 career points and ranks second in school history behind Amanda Jackson (1,979).

Among the lesser-known players performing well for the RedHawks is redshirt junior forward Kristin Judson. The Bloomington, Ill., native is averaging 13.3 minutes, 5.3 points and 2.4 rebounds per game off the bench, and she’s shooting 60.0 percent (21 of 35) from the floor.

Football

Miami’s four nonconference games in 2013 are set. If you’re looking to plan ahead, here they are:

• Aug. 31, at Marshall — The Thundering Herd finished 5-7 this season, averaging 40.9 points and 534.2 yards per game.

• Sept. 7, at Kentucky — The Wildcats finished 2-10 this year and now have a new coach (Mark Stoops). They beat Samford (34-3) and Kent State (47-14).

• Sept. 21, Cincinnati — The Bearcats are 9-3 this season and will face Duke in the Belk Bowl on Dec. 27 in Charlotte, N.C. They also have a new coach (Tommy Tuberville).

• Sept. 28, at Illinois — The Fighting Illini finished 2-10 this year. They beat Charleston Southern (44-0) and Western Michigan (24-7).

Swimming

The Miami men’s and women’s teams are idle until next month. The women will face James Madison in Boca Raton, Fla., on Jan. 3, and both squads will visit Cincinnati on Jan. 11.

Four Butler County swimmers are RedHawks this season — freshmen Evan Bader (Talawanda) and Cole Fryman (Edgewood) with the men, and seniors Ellen Barhorst (Lakota West) and Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) with the women.
