Ohio State junior place kicker Drew Basil has been named to the initial watch list for the 2012 Lou Groza College Place-Kicker Award, which is presented by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
Basil led the Big Ten Conference in 2011 by hitting on 84.2-percent of his field goal attempts (16 of 19), a percentage that ranks fifth all-time at Ohio State. His 16 field goals rank ninth in Buckeye history and his 12 consecutive made attempts at one point last year was the third-longest streak in school history.
TOUR DE FRANCE
Voeckler wins 10th stage in Alps
Thomas Voeckler of France led a five-rider breakaway to win the 10th stage of the Tour de France as the race entered the Alps, while Bradley Wiggins retained the overall lead.
The 120.9-mile ride from Macon-sur-Valserine marked a return to racing after Tuesday’s tumultuous rest day in which a Cofidis rider Remy Di Gregorio was suspended by his team following his arrest by police in a doping probe.
For the first time in the Tour, the peloton scaled the 10.9 mile Grand Colombier pass — classified as one of the hardest climbs in pro cycling in part for two tough patches with steep, 12 percent gradients.
HORSE RACING
I’ll Have Another in pain after Preakness
Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another was ailing well before he was retired from racing with a tendon injury the day ahead of his bid to win the Belmont Stakes and become the first Triple Crown champion in 34 years.
The New York Times reports in a story hat veterinary records obtained from New York state racing officials show that I’ll Have Another was being treated with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs in the weeks after his win in the Preakness on May 19 and before the Belmont, which was June 9.
According to the records, X-rays of the colt’s front ankles and knees taken four days after the Preakness showed that I’ll Have Another had osteoarthritis.
