FAIRBORN — Wright State is attacking a decline in men’s basketball attendance, a problem for programs across the nation, in an array of ways: from hiring an outside agency to assist with ticket sales, to lowering the price of season tickets to using social media to make the fan experience interactive.
“We’re doing a lot,” said Mark Gazdik, associate athletics director for marketing and promotions. “We’re being more aggressive. That was something we looked at in the offseason. It was a matter of taking a look at our game presentation — the atmosphere, improving that — and also engaging our current fans a lot better and improving relationships with them.”
Wright State averaged 3,903 fans in the 2011-12 season, down from 4,792 the year before.
One step Wright State has taken is hiring Get Real Sports Sales, which will have two employees on campus at the Nutter Center calling fans and selling tickets. Butler University, the Charlotte Bobcats and the Cincinnati Reds are a few of the firm’s other clients.
“It’s very much the professional model where you have the Reds or the Bengals or the Colts or the Pacers, and they have a very large sales staff to sell tickets,” Gazdik said. “They’re making calls, building relationships with fans and with people who may not know too much about Wright State basketball and Wright State athletics in general. We’re really trying to introduce Wright State to as many people as possible.”
Fans who already know Wright State well, the season-ticket holders, will pay less for their packages as premium ticket packages drop from $235 (plus donation) to $205 and nonpremium tickets fall from $210 to $160.
The trade-off is that there will be 15 home games, compared to 17 last season. That lessens the savings from a per-game basis, though season-ticket holders would get a 16th game (at no extra cost) if the Raiders host a first-round game in the Horizon League tournament.
Wright State is getting more creative in other ways. It will honor the 1983 Division II national championship team on its 30th anniversary next season with a special event that will include the current team wearing throwback jerseys — not including the short shorts of that era, however.
Fans will also be able to purchase souvenir soft drink cups all season — season-ticket holders will get them for free — and will receive discounted refills throughout the season.
At games next season, premium season-ticket holders will be able to order food and beverages from their seats using their smart phones.
On the social media front, Wright State is launching “Raider Up! Rewards.” Fans will earn points toward prizes by checking in at the Nutter Center on Four Square, or commenting on a Wright State Facebook post, to name a couple of examples.
“It’s a program to reward our fans for engaging and being a part of Wright State athletics,” Gazdik said.
