Dayton pulls away from Wright State

By John Cummings

FAIRBORN —

University of Dayton women’s basketball coach Jim Jabir knew there were going to be nights like this.

When the season started with four new starters and six freshmen on the roster, the Flyers boss knew there would be nights when the win looked more Salvador Dali than Picasso, and Wednesday night at the Nutter Center was one of those.

The 23rd-ranked Flyers were out-scored in fast break points (6-0), shot just 40 percent from the floor (33 of 82), and looked out of sync but still found a way to take a 95-73 win over Wright State in the annual rivalry.

“I’m very disappointed … I’m angry,” Jabir said after the Flyers improved to 7-0. “Our defense was non-existent, we gave up too many rebounds, dribble-drive baskets … we had so many mental breakdowns.”

The Flyers, who led by 26 at the break, watched the Raiders chip the lead down to 10, 72-62 on a basket by K.C. Elkins with 8:55 left in the game. The Flyers, however, went on a 7-0 run with Samantha MacKay burying one of her six 3-pointers in the midst of the run to push the lead back to 17 and Wright State never got any closer.

“We played hard and we made it a game there for awhile,” Raiders coach Mike Bradbury said after his team fell to 2-3. “But, Dayton is as talented of a team as we will play all year, and we play a pretty tough schedule this season.”

Dayton jumped to a quick 12-2 lead on a basket by Cassie Sant with 16:41 left in the opening half and built the lead to 20 (38-18) on a 3-pointer by Kelley Austria. UD led 53-27 at the break before the Raiders made their run.

“The difference between a good team and a championship team is that championship teams keep pushing when they are up 25,” Flyers sophomore Ally Mallott said. “We left off the gas; we have to stay consistent.”

MacKay and Mallott led the Flyers with 20 points each while Jodie Cornelie-Sugmundova added 15 and Sant and Andrea Hoover adding 12 each. Ivory James led WSU with 22 points while Kim Demmings added 14 before fouling out with 14 minutes left in the game.

“It’s crazy (to be like this after a win), but we are striving to be more,” Jabir said. “It’s not just to be happy with the win, it is about us getting better and we didn’t get any better defensively today.”
