Early’s late 3 lifts Thurgood in OT

Thurgood Marshall didn’t exactly lay an egg in the Good Samaritan Flyin’ to the Hoop opener last Friday at Fairmont’s Trent Arena. But it sure seemed like it.

“Obviously, we didn’t give the performance that we desired to,” reflected Cougars coach Darnell Hoskins following a 71-47 beat-down by national power Findlay Prep (Nev.) before a capacity crowd

“They fundamentally took us out of what we normally are able to do.”

That would be playing lockdown defense and winning where few teams are able to do so. Thurgood did just that on Saturday night, knocking off multi-state champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 68-65 in overtime on the road.

Thurgood forced a turnover to regain a final possession. Junior guard Rachaun Martin pulled up short of the lane and drew St. V’s defense. He passed to Edmond Early on the wing. Early beat the buzzer with a game-winning three, then was mobbed by teammates.

Thurgood improved to 12-1. These teams could well play again, although that could only be in the state D-II final four.

Classic wins: Unbeaten Fairmont and Bellbrook represented the area well in the girls Flyin’ equivalent, the Classic in the Country at Berlin Hiland in northeastern Ohio.

Fairmont’s Kathryn Westbeld had 21 points and 15 rebounds in Sunday’s 67-47 defeat of Wadsworth. Both teams are among the state’s top 10. Westbeld also went for 21 points and 17 rebounds in Saturday’s 43-35 defeat of Regis Jesuit (Colo.). MaxPreps had that game listed as the weekend No. 1 matchup in the nation.

Bellbrook overcame a 13-point deficit late in the third quarter to stun Akron Hoban, 45-40, in OT. Chea Taylor had 17 points to lead the Eagles (13-2).

Four more: Fairmont High School will add four graduates to its athletic hall of fame.

The 2013 inductees are: Chris Rolfe (2001 graduate, soccer); Kiki Eby (’84, field hockey); Jo Ann Kurz (Fairmont East, ’73; tennis, field hockey, basketball); and Tom Adams (Fairmont East, ‘72; football basketball and baseball).

An induction ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Fairmont Recital Hall. The event is open to the public.

Dixie’s finest: Johnny Adams (2006 grad), Steve Powers (1990) and Charlie Clark (’66) will be inducted into the Dixie athletic hall of fame. A ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. prior to the Saturday’s boys varsity basketball game against visiting National Trail.

Adams was a rare four-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, track and baseball. Powers played football, basketball and track and Clark was a football/track standout.

Family, friends and hall of fame members — as well as the public — are welcome to the induction ceremony.

Can’t beat that: The Springboro hockey team ran its record to 19-0-1 by sweeping its Shootout Tourney at South Metro Ice Rink last weekend. The Panthers beat Lakota West 7-2 in the final.

Springboro played in the Columbus MLK Classic over the holiday weekend.
