If you were wondering what to get your favorite outdoor enthusiast this year, fret no more. There are plenty of new and unique items on the market, some you can get from local stores and others that are available on line.
On the local scene, a stop at Fisherman’s Headquarters on Keowee Street in Dayton uncovered some interesting reels for catfishing from Diawa. The Regal Plus comes in two sizes: 4000 for channel cats at $50 and the larger 5000 for blue cats and shovelheads at $60.
Fisherman’s Headquarters also has a five-lure special of its own Swim Jigs in sizes 3/16 up to ½ ounce. The five jigs come in a Plano tackle box for $24.95.
If you are anticipating an icy winter, here are a couple of items to consider:
• A pair of heated insoles from ThermaCell. They are cool (bad choice of adjectives), because they are warm. The best part is they can be controlled by a remote. Let’s say you are at a football game and the insoles are keeping your feet toasty warm, but then they get a bit too warm. Push a button on your remote and you can drop the temp or turn it off. If they get cold again, turn them back on. HeatedInsoles sell for $130 at thermacell.com.
• To help keep from slipping and sliding on the ice this winter, the outdoors person could use some MICROspikes from Kahtoola. They stretch over any footwear, providing a quick and easy solution to slippery situations. While ice fishing comes to mind as a perfect use, people with steep, icy driveways would benefit. Even icy sidewalks can be treacherous so something to help grip will be useful. They sell for $60 at rei.com.
• Anybody who hikes or travels by bike or vehicle can use a water bottle. Instead of paying for one of those plastic bottles each time you go, why not take your own reusable, filtered bottle? The Hydros Bottle comes in five colors and is priced at $28 at hydrosbottle.com. You can also get an insulated tote for an extra $15.
• If you take your own chairs to outdoor concerts, softball and baseball games or just enjoy an afternoon of fishing along the banks of a lake or stream, the Sport-Brella Chair should be a perfect fit. It’s about the same size as all of the sport chairs you can buy in a blue fabric bag, but this one has a 360-degree swiveling, sliding umbrella, providing coverage from sun, rain and wind. When you are ready to leave, it folds and goes back in the bag and into the trunk of your car. It includes a built-in cup holder, bottle opener and item pouch. It sells for $40 at sport-brella.com.
• If bugs bug you while hunting, fishing, hiking or camping, you might want to look at some apparel from Insect Shield. Something as small as a bandana or a pair of socks can help keep insects away. A cap, shirt or pair of pants would be even more protection. The socks sell for $9.50, the bandana for $9.95 and the cap for $18.95. Shirt and pants prices vary. Check out insectshield.com.
• Ohio State Park gift cards are available at ohio.reserveworld.com for any dollar amount $5 and above. They are good at state park campgrounds, cottages and some lodges for rentals and merchandise. Visit ohiodnr.com. You can buy someone a fishing or hunting license as a gift at wildohio.com.
• For dog lovers, you might want to try a Just Ducky leash or collar for $19.95 at justduckyproducts.com. There are all sorts of styles and colors.
