Moraine Country Club will host an interesting event this week.
It’s a 54-hole stroke play tournament put on by a group called the Society of Seniors, which was founded in 1983 and includes top senior amateurs from all over the United States.
Some have memberships at multiple exclusive clubs such as Pine Valley, Pinehurst, Winged Foot, Desert Mountain, Shoal Creek, Quail Ridge, Castle Pines, Loxahatchee and Butler National.
According to the organization’s website, the 900-plus members of the SOS include every living U.S. Senior Amateur champion, numerous Walker Cup players and captains, and former U.S. Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur, British Amateur and British Senior Amateur champions.
Obviously, not all will be playing in the Dayton event, which has been named The Hesler in honor of the late Jack Hesler of Columbus. Hesler, an insurance agent with memberships at Scioto Country Club and Muirfield Village Golf Club, was one of Ohio’s finest amateurs for many years. He won the Ohio Amateur in 1971 and the Ohio Seniors Championship five times from 1984-94.
This week’s event begins with a shotgun practice round on Monday afternoon. Tournament play will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
Two Daytonians — Brooks Kerrick and Skip Snow — will be in the field along with Jack Sayers of Springfield. Snow, who has won three Ohio Senior Championships, was the super senior champion in the last SOS competition of 2011 at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Fla.
There are three age group divisions: 55-64, 65-74 and 75-plus.
SOS has eight tournaments, all of which are played at scratch and on the finest courses. Last year The Hesler was played at Brookside Country Club in Columbus, site of last week’s Ohio Amateur.
Four of the eight 2012 SOS events have already been held in North Palm Beach, Fla., Naples, Fla., Palm Springs, Calif., and Orlando, Fla. The Dayton tournament will be followed by competitions at Charleston, S.C., Oct. 7-10, Fort Myers, Fla., Oct. 22-25, and Palm City, Fla., Dec. 4-7.
Magnificent Marcum
Gabby Marcum achieved a rare feat last week when she won the Ohio Junior Girls Championship at Marion. The 17-year-old Beavercreek High School senior is the third Dayton-area golfer to win the Ohio Junior in its 36 years. Jamie Fischer of Centerville won the event at Marion Country Club in 1985 and Laura Murray of Tipp City did it in 2009.
Marcum, who has a junior membership at Country Club of the North, posted scores of 73 and 78 for a score of 151 and won by three strokes.
In April and May she won Plantation junior tour events at PipeStone and Walden Ponds.
Chip shots
Fields at junior events have been smaller than usual this year, but Thursday’s Janet Beardsley Junior Tournament at Community Golf Course will have a large turnout, as usual. It’s open to girls who live within 50 miles of Dayton.
The Miami Valley Golf Association’s annual Junior Metro Championship, which was to have been played June 28-29 at Homestead Golf Course, was canceled for lack of participants.
Steve Jurick, who runs the MVGA, is considering changing Greene Country Club’s normal routing when the MVGA stages the Metropolitan Championship Aug. 2-5. Jurick would like to have the tournament end on the No. 9 green, which is closer to the clubhouse than No. 18, but he’s thinking of doing more than reversing the nines. When registration is complete, he’ll poll the players to see if they approve.
