MIDDLETOWN —
Oakwood has sent some talented golf teams to the Division II state boys high school golf tournament the last few years.
The squads from 2009 and 2010 became state champions. Last year some poor putting proved costly as the Lumberjacks finished fourth.
However, the 2012 team headed for state next Friday and Saturday in Columbus on Ohio State’s Scarlet course may have the most overall talent of any Oakwood squad in recent memory.
With Alex Mayhew winning medalist honors, Oakwood shot a 311 team score to repeat as Southwest District D-II champ on the 6,800-yard, par-72 layout at Weatherwax Golf Club on Thursday.
Alter claimed the other team slot, qualifying to state with a 326. This is the fourth straight year Oakwood and Alter will represent the Southwest in the D-II tournament. The last time neither made a state appearance was 2005.
Mayhew, playing No. 4, tied for low round with Alec Tahy of Alter and Cameron Willis of Eaton, all at 75. They had a three-hole playoff for medalist honors, which Mayhew won with a birdie.
Willis, a sophomore, and Will Grimmer (77) of Mariemont earned the individual qualifier spots to state for players not on advancing teams.
Oakwood’s individual scores were Mayhew at 75, No. 3 man Tripp French at 77, No. 5 Alex Marquis at 70 and Jack Kegelmeyer (No. 1) and Austin Wells (No. 2) at 80.
“We’ve got a couple more guys who can shoot in the 70s who didn’t make it,” said Marquis, a senior who has gone to state all four years. “This team by far has the most depth.
“You have to bring your A game every day in practice or matches or you might lose your spot on varsity. The internal competition keeps us all sharp. We feel like we can make a run at state again, but we all have to putt a lot better. That’s what wins championships.”
Oakwood coach Jen Lohmeyer was obviously pleased with her team sweeping all the honors. “This tournament always has the most pressure because there’s only two teams and individual spots and so little room for error,” she said. “Everyone played well today.”
The biggest shock came when defending state D-II individual champion Clark Engle of Springfield Shawnee failed to qualify for state.
Engle, who is headed to Ohio State on a golf scholarship, shot 40-43-83 and tied for 14th.
“Not much I can say,” said Engle. “Most disappointed I’ve ever been. I didn’t hit the fairways on the front nine and came in with a 40.
“So I was really pressing when I started the back nine. I went bogey, bogey, bogey, double bogey. Obviously that put me out of it.”
Springfield Kenton Ridge, the defending D-II team champion, shot 354 to finish 11th in the 12-team field.
In the D-III portion of the district, which played at 6,600 yards at par-72, Cincinnati Country Day was the team champion at 327 followed by Cincinnati Seven Hills at 330. Russia was two strokes behind CCD after the front nine but faded to finish third at 340.
Ishon Ghildyah of Cincinnati Country Day was the D-III medalist, winning a playoff with Jordan Reese of Cedarville, Sam Steinman of Cincinnati Summit Country Day and Nick Sims of West Liberty-Salem. All shot 75.
Sims and Steinman are the individual qualifiers to the D-III state next Friday and Saturday at the North Star Resort in Sunbury, north of Columbus.
