The Coldwater High School football team is a number-cruncher’s dream.
Besides the stats the team puts up in its spread offense, there are some impressive numbers of the more team-oriented variety.
There is 16, the number of years the Cavaliers have made the playoffs consecutively, the longest active streak in the state. There is three, the number of consecutive state title games the Cavaliers have played. There is 13, the number of wins Coldwater has this season.
Then there is the big number — 60.
If Coldwater makes it to the state title game this year, for the fourth-consecutive time, by defeating Liberty-Benton in the Division V state semifinal on Saturday at Lima, the Cavaliers’ 23 seniors will be guaranteed of playing 60 games in four years.
“That ‘Play 60 motto from the NFL? We stole it,” Coldwater coach Chip Otten said. “These guys that are seniors, this could be their 60th game if we win this week. We don’t spend a lot of time on it, but it’s a source of motivation. You can’t get to 60 if you don’t take care of business and if you aren’t ready for the playoffs. The last couple weeks we’ve changed it to ‘Win 60.’ ”
The motto has been a rallying cry all season for Coldwater’s seniors.
“It turned into ‘Win 60’ because we feel we are capable of doing that,” quarterback Austin Bruns said. “We have a great team. If we take care of business we would like to win that 60th. That’s two extra seasons. Right now we are the only team in Ohio to do that. It’s really been quite an experience.”
The experience has come with some bumps along the way and tragedy. Coldwater, which has won state titles in 2005 and 2007, has been to the state finals the last years only to lose. The trip in 2009 came under former coach John Reed, who had been diagnosed with cancer during the season. Reed died months later.
Bruns was a freshman at the time.
“He coached with a lot of passion and a lot of heart,” Bruns said. “He kick-started our program and now he’s nationally known as one of the great coaches from Ohio. We wouldn’t be here without him. He’s still looking over us.”
Otten took over the next season. A native of Kettering, Otten coached as an assistant throughout the area before landing at Coldwater in the early 2000s. Otten has continued the Coldwater state tradition with Bruns at quarterback, the latest in a long line of great signal callers to have populated the program for the last decade. Bruns has Division I college interest, including from Kent State.
“We’ve had several guys who are D-I athletes,” Otten said. “With Austin, we’ve been very fortunate to have a guy like that at quarterback, who is at that level. He can do a lot of things.”
Bruns is focused only on a state championship.
“For us, it’s unfinished business,” Bruns said. “Hopefully we get another shot at it. For the seniors, we want to go out with a bang and say we won it.”
