A little ‘snap and a spin’ will do it for Miami East wrestler

COLUMBUS — Miami East senior Zane Goldberg could not believe it.

In his third trip to the state wrestling tournament, Goldberg had just claimed a 3-2 win over Beachwood’s Alec Jacober in their 125-pound Division III semifinal.

“Oh, my gosh, did that just happen?” Goldberg said as a huge smile spread across his face. “I had already done what I had wanted to do (place), so I just went out there and winged it.”

Jacober led 1-0 heading into the third period. Goldberg recorded an escape and a takedown with 0:48 seconds left to punch his ticket to the finals.

“It was just a snap and spin,” Goldberg said. “We practice that thousands of times. I never thought that would be the move to win it, but the basics work.”

Madness at 135: First Miamisburg’s defending state champ Shawn Fayette was upset in the first round. The quarters brought upsets of Springboro’s Tyler Riegle and Fairmont’s Jake Sage.

In the consolation D-I bracket, Fayette defeated Sage 9-2 to guarantee a place, and a third match with Riegle this season.

Fayette recorded a takedown in the second period and a reversal in the third for a 4-1 win. Riegle will wrestle for seventh place.

Adding to a Noble lineage: Lebanon sophomore Eddie Noble (103) will be the owner of the sixth state medal in his family.

Noble dropped his quarterfinal match, but earned a top eight finish with a 6-3 win over Oak Hills’ Brad Baas in the second round of consolation.

Eddie joins his uncle, John, who claimed two state titles en route to being a four-time state placer and his father, Eddie, who was fourth in 1985.

“I want to follow the name and place high like them,” Noble said. “It drives me harder. I want to leave my own footsteps.

First run: Arcanum’s Jared Beatty and John Sullenbarger have added to their history for the fourth-year program. Both will medal, wrestling for seventh place.

“I can’t complain,” Arcanum coach Rick Stone said. “For our first year having someone come to the state tournament, and for both of them to place is a great job.

“I am proud, proud, very proud of them.”
