Beavercreek sets unofficial school rushing record

Overview: The Beavers (3-1) used three basic plays to set an unofficial school record of 426 yards rushing on 72 carries. Zach Smith, a 6-foot, 200-pound senior, ran off tackle 39 times for 220 yards and three 1-yard touchdown runs despite sitting out practice all week with a sore knee.

Allen Lawrence, a 6-0, 220-pound sophomore, took a pitch sweep from quarterback Justin Weaver 14 times for 118 yards. Weaver kept the ball himself 16 times for 74 yards.

The three TD drives by Creek were of the old-fashioned grind-it-out variety. Drive No. 1 was 71 yards in 13 plays. Smith had 62 yards rushing on that march. Drive No. 2 was 82 yards in 12 plays with Weaver getting 45 yards on a keep. Drive No. 3 was 80 yards in 14 plays with Smith contributing 56. Creek led 14-0 at intermission rushing for 236 yards. Turning point: Beavercreek was getting most of its yardage the first quarter with Smith running inside. Xenia began bringing up the cornerbacks to support the run since Creek never throws the ball. With 5:37 to go on a 2nd-and-7 from the Creek 20, Weaver faked an off-tackle play to Smith and popped outside for 45 yards. Two plays later he hit Lawrence on the pitch sweep for 14 yards.

Quote: β€œThe right side of the line β€” Dan McHugh (6-3, 280) and Garret Alcorn (6-6, 240) β€” were just blowing people up,” said Beavercreek coach Scott Clodfelter.
