BEAVERCREEK —

Jalen Camper intended to make history Tuesday.

And he did.

Led by career-highs from Camper (30 points) and junior Airius Moore (21 points), Beavercreek survived Dunbar 75-69 in a nonconference match of Miami Valley heavyweights.

“It was personal for me,” said Camper, a senior. “I remember freshman year when (Dunbar) had that state championship team with Geron Johnson. I sat on the bench and watched them run all over us. I made a vow then to give it back to them my senior year. I wanted to put it in the history books that we beat Dunbar.”

Creek (11-3) almost had a night to forget.

Ahead 70-49 following two Moore free throws with 4:24 to go, Creek lost focus and control as Dunbar (10-2) used an 18-0 run over a three-minute stretch to pull within 70-67 with 1:23 to go. Four free throws – including the last two by Camper – in the final 26 seconds secured the win.

“We can’t remember the last time we beat Dunbar,” Beavercreek head coach John Ahrns said. “It certainly hasn’t been in my five years.”

Since Creek and Dunbar renewed their rivalry in 2008, the series has been decidedly lopsided, with the Wolverines having won five straight by an average of 16 points.

Camper and Moore stopped the streak.

A Division I linebacker prospect, Moore executed Creek’s offense to precision from his point guard position. The Beavers had just six turnovers through three quarters.

“I told him at the beginning of the year that I think he’s the best point guard in the area,” Camper said. “Tonight I think he believed that.”

Said Moore, who fed Camper whenever available: “He’s a scorer. When I throw it to him I start walking back down the court. I expect it to go in.”

Dunbar was paced by super sophomore A.J. Harris’ 30 points.

“Harris is the quickest guy I’ve ever seen,” Ahrns said. “I’ve haven’t seen a guy get from one end of the floor to the other that quick with guys on him since the last time I went to an NBA game.”

Creek improves to 8-0 at home and hosts Northmont in a critical GWOC Central Division game on Friday before ending the season with six of seven on the road. Dunbar is at Belmont Friday. Both teams will play in this weekend’s Good Samaritan Flyin’ to the Hoop.

“Our guys have been through the wars,” Ahrns said. “They lost some the last couple of years, but now they’re starting to come out on top.”
