MIAMISBURG — Lebanon softball coach Brian Kindell is quick to offer a disclaimer about his squad.

The Warriors entered their Greater Western Ohio Conference South Division showdown with co-leader Miamisburg on Monday hitting .450 as a team and outscoring opponents 183-23.

With a strong wind blowing out at Miamisburg, the hits kept coming. Lebanon cranked out 16 hits — including two home runs — in a 13-1 six-inning mercy rule win over the Vikings.

“One through nine, we’ve put 12 to 13 different players in the line up and they all hit pretty well,” Kindell said. “This is my best offensive team ... to this point. We take it day-by-day. Tomorrow is another big challenge, and the kids know we are only as good as our last game.”

The Warriors (18-0, 7-0 GWOC South) started fast as Samantha Showalter led off the game with a single, went to second on an error and scored on a bloop single by Vanessa Lay. Lay jogged home as Katie Bergman belted her ninth homer. Ana Walter singled and scored when Savannah Scott homered to left-center for a 5-0 lead.

“When we get somebody on base, it is our responsibility to get them in,” Lay said after going 4-for-4 with four RBIs. “If we don’t, then we feel like we let the team down. It (the five-run first) was great to get the pressure off because they are a great team, but we had to back it up with defense.”

Lebanon freshman Tara Trainer worked out of problems in the first and third innings before the Warrior offense added to the lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Showalter and another RBI single by Lay for an 8-0 lead.

“We knew they were going to hit the ball,” Miamisburg coach Kathleen McGaha said. “We didn’t play our best, but we knew what it would take to compete with them today.”

Miamisburg (14-3, 6-1) plated a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Jenna King, but Kenzie Morgan came on to relieve Trainer and induced an inning-ending double play.

The Warriors can clinch a share of the South title today when the Vikings travel to Lebanon.

“Last year, we beat them 5-0 here and turned around and lost to them the next day,” Kindell said. “If we are complacent and satisfied with one win, then history can repeat itself.”
