It was four years ago that receiver Roy Roundtree and running back Michael Shaw became last-minute members of Rich Rodriguez’s first Michigan recruiting class, the former spurning Purdue, the latter Penn State.
The Trotwood-Madison High School graduates have made names for themselves up north, but the future — athletically anyway — is perhaps less certain than either would prefer.
Roundtree, who redshirted as a freshman, returns next fall hoping to re-introduce himself to the Big Ten — and pro scouts — after virtually disappearing as a junior. Shaw, his eligibility exhausted, now seeks a pro career, and he took a step that way Monday when he gained 29 yards on seven carries in the second annual Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game in Tucson, Ariz.
Projected as a low-round NFL draft pick or free agent, Shaw will try to position himself as an every-down back as opposed to a spindly speed merchant who runs too high and prefers to skirt the edges. Those are the raps against him, so every bit of exposure counts. One of Shaw’s runs netted 16 yards.
“I just want everybody to know about me,” Shaw, a track star at T-M, told the Tucson Citizen newspaper leading up to the game. “I love to run inside. I love to be physical.”
While Shaw campaigns to be noticed, Roundtree’s offseason challenge will be to figure out why he fell off the map this past season, slumping to 19 catches, 355 yards and two touchdowns after catching 72 for 935 and seven TDs the year before.
But first it was time for a little fun. On Tuesday, Roundtree and dynamic quarterback Denard Robinson (who recently announced he’ll be returning to play in the fall), were spotted cheering in the student section at a Michigan basketball game. Their enthusiastic appearance in “Maize Rage” T-shirts prompted this bit of gushing from Athletic Director Dave Brandon on his blog:
“The two young men were no different than any other student. ... Thank you, Denard and Roy, for continuing to display what is right about college sports and college athletes.”

• There’s a strong Miami Valley flavor to the Cincinnati State women’s basketball team, which improved to 16-0 Wednesday by stomping Edison Community College, 83-64. Top contributors include Brittany Latimer (Xenia), averaging 12.3 points and 6.6 rebounds; Kara McLemore (Trotwood-Madison), 15.6 points and 8.5 rebounds; and point guard DeDe Henry (Trotwood-Madison), 6.2 points, 4.5 assists, 3.6 steals and 3.5 rebounds.
• After stops at Benedictine College in Kansas and OSU-Lima, 5-foot-8 point guard Keith Winn (Trotwood-Madison) seems to have found a home at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Ala., although he’s been used sparingly thus far, appearing in four games.
• Track standout Shawn Roberts (Centerville) had the lone victory for Georgia Tech at the Kentucky Invitational, winning the 3,000 meters in 8 minutes, 20.53 seconds.
