FAIRBORN — Fairborn extended its girls high school fast-pitch softball winning streak to 12 straight Monday night.

The host Skyhawks (18-8) made the plays when needed as they shut out Centerville, 1-0, in the Division I, Dayton 2 sectional.

The only run came in the bottom of the third inning. Junior catcher Becca Davis sent one of her two doubles to the alley in left-center field. Jenifer Neel sacrificed her to third and winning pitcher Sophie Bolser (18-7) brought her home with a single to right.

Bolser, a senior, was in control with eight strikeouts and only one walk. She had a key part in a play in the top of the first inning which set the tone for the game.

Centerville’s Katie Guanciale drew a one-out walk and moved to second on an infield single. Losing pitcher Alyssa Sambrosky (7-7) followed with a sharp single left.

Fairborn’s Kiersten Keeton charged the ball and came up throwing. Guanciale had rounded third and was heading home. But Keeton’s throw got to Bolser in the cut-off position so quickly, Guanciale was left in limbo. She scrambled to get back to third and was tagged out by Bolser a step from the bag.

After that play, Bolser set down 14 of the next 16 batters she faced. Centerville (11-14) finally got to her with three straight bloop singles in the top of the seventh with one out.

Bolser kept the ball low hoping to force Centerville to hit the ball on the ground. Ashley Sharpe and Chris Schelle obliged with hard grounders to third baseman Kalia Mohr. On each ground ball, Centerville pinch runners Naddiyah Cross and MC Wynn went hard into the maybe 5-foot-2, 100-pound Davis hoping to jar the ball loose.

“I may be small, but I’m tough,” beamed Davis. “No way I was going to drop the ball. Kalia’s throws were right on the money and I had the plate blocked.”

No. 8 Fairborn hosts No. 14 Wayne 5 p.m. Wednesday.
