Elks place second, send three to state

FAIRFIELD —

Last season, Centerville 152-pounder Alexander Bair walked out of Fairfield High School 0-2 in the Division I district tournament.

How things have changed.

“That is the only tournament I went 0-2 at last year and it was not a good feeling,” Bair said after claiming the 152 title. “I thought about it all spring and all summer.”

Saturday, after handing Mason’s Brian McCrea a 7-3 defeat, he had to think of something else a few times before it sank in.

“I’m a state qualifier… it is a good feeling,” Bair said. “I had to tell myself a couple of times before it actually clicked.”

Bair will be joined at state by Alec Gilchrist (170) and Adam Tonkin (195) as the Elks finished second with 96 points.

“It’s a little bittersweet,” Centerville coach Alan Bair said. “This is a tough district; there are two or three guys we felt we could take with us and it just didn’t work out. We wrestled a good tournament, it has been a total team effort all season.”

Bair and Beavercreek’s Nick Corba have one thing in common now – both are first-time district champs.

Despite placing at state as a sophomore, Corba’s 5-3 win over Miamisburg’s Kyle Schmidt at 170 marked his first district title.

“(Not placing at state last year) drove me a lot,” Corba said. “This year was a no-holds-barred year for me; Kyle and I have wrestled each other a lot. He likes to brawl and I like to brawl; I knew it would be an exciting match.”

The Greater Western Ohio Conference will be represented in Division I at the state tournament by 10 schools. Butler joined Centerville with three qualifiers while Miamisburg, Beavercreek and Fairmont each advanced two and Lebanon, Sidney, Wayne, Troy and Springfield each moved one on.

Division II: Graham wrestling coach Jeff Jordan was having fun at the Division II Goshen district wrestling tournament.

Sure, advancing eight to the state meet will lead to fun, but it was on the team side that he was having a good time.

The Falcons, who normally cruise to a three-digit lead after the semifinals, entered the finals with just a 52-point lead on Hamilton Ross in the team race.

“I am enjoying the competition,” Jordan said. “Ross has a really good team. (Coach) Rich (Dunn) has done a nice job.”

In the end, the Falcons were too much, going 7-0 in title matches in finishing with 231.5 points.

Eli Stickley and Eli Seipel squared off for the second consecutive week in what could end up being a state final preview.

Stickley handed Eaton’s Michael May a 4-0 loss at 106 while Seipel defeated Bellbrook’s defending state champ Cameron Kelly for the second consecutive week, 4-2.

Eaton got a district title from Payton Ott at 126.

At Bowling Green, Franklin got a title from Chase Henderson at 285 and also advanced Forrest Brewer (113).

Division III: It will be a super Sunday at Trent Arena as the Division III district finishes up.

Entering day two, seven teams are within 15 points of each other. Troy Christian holds a 2.5 point lead over Dayton Christian and Covington. Carlisle (40) is fourth while Mechanicsburg (38) and Greeneview (37.5) are sixth and seventh.
