Northmont holds off Creek for key GWOC win

CLAYTON —

If Northmont High School’s boys basketball team had any doubts about its potential, they were erased Friday night.

Northmont benefitted from one too many Beavercreek turnovers — one of the biggest coming with 9.3 seconds left when ‘Creek threw the ball away on an inbounds pass — for a 65-61 victory in the Greater Western Ohio Conference opener for both teams.

The Thunderbolts (4-1) held a 61-54 lead with 2:12 to play when the Beavers (4-2) made one final charge. Kyle Rader’s 3-pointer with 22 seconds left pulled Beavercreek to 63-61. Northmont’s Keith Richardson made it 64-61 with a free throw two seconds later. Beavercreek then missed a 3-pointer and retained possession when the rebound went out of bounds. But the Beavers couldn’t take advantage, throwing the inbounds pass away near midcourt. Richardson then added another free throw to seal the win with 7.7 seconds left.

“We had 19 turnovers tonight and we thought going in if we had above 15 we’d be in trouble,” Beavercreek coach John Ahrns said. “Just so many of them were unnecesary. … Every guy we have could have done better tonight. I could have coached better, we could have played better. Not our best night.”

The teams swapped the lead six times overall and both held leads in every quarter. Beavercreek’s largest lead came at 23-15 early in the second quarter. Northmont’s came soon after. The T-Bolts rattled off an 18-0 run after the Beavers went up by eight, getting points from seven different players. Northmont led by as many as nine in the third quarter, but Beavercreek rallied with a 14-3 run to take a 47-45 lead to start the fourth.

Beavercreek’s Jalen Camper scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. Rader added 12, Airius Moore 11 and Jarred Waters 10.

“Camper is the real deal. I’ve watched a bunch of film on him and that young man can play,” Northmont coach Jim Brown said. “I thought Dominique (Stollings) did a phenomenal job on him and he still made baskets.”

Stolling led Northmont with 17 and Richardson added 14. Jordan Love (10) and Terry Ramsey (9) combined for 19 key points off the bench.

“This is a good win for us. It proves to our kids we can play with anybody,” Brown said. “Beavercreek is as good as it gets in this area. Until you do it, you can talk and talk and talk about doing it.”
