SPRINGBORO —
The showdown Monday night for the Greater Western Ohio Conference South Division title between Lebanon and Springboro came down to one big play.
The Panthers provided it.
Lebanon’s six-year stranglehold on the GWOC South came to an end when Boro’s Kelly Williams got on the other end of a corner kick from Sarah Hawk and knocked it into the left side of the net for the lone goal with 7:31 left in the contest.
“We were just unlucky on one corner kick and let one by,” Lebanon coach Bruce Bingham said after his team fell to 7-7-1 and 4-1-0 in the GWOC. “It is one of those things. We played hard, we played tough … it just didn’t work out.”
The Warriors entered the contest with a half-game lead on the Panthers and needed just a tie in order to defend their title. Springboro needed a win to claim the conference title.
“We played to win the game,” Bingham said. “We didn’t want to tie, we wanted to win because that is the way it should be. It just didn’t happen for us.”
Most of the game was played between the goal boxes as neither team recorded a shot on goal in the first half. Springboro had the first legitimate shot in the contest when Hanna Cook pushed a shot just wide with 13:54 left in the contest.
Springboro scored on its second chance of the night when Williams scored her fifth goal of the season.
“It was a great corner kick and I got a great run on it,” Williams said. “We were just counting down the minutes; we were so nervous. We had to win GWOC, this was our year.”
While coming close most of the night, Lebanon managed just one shot on goal — with 6:02 left on a 35-yard attempt that Panther keeper Haley Gribler easily corralled. The Warriors entered the game having scored 37 goals in 14 contests.
“I thought their forwards would get us at the seams more than they did because of their speed,” Gribler said. “But we’ve got a freshman sweeper (Livi Raflik) who was phenomenal tonight. The whole team in front of me was so incredible tonight.”
Springboro coach Eric Detmer was not surprised by the five total shots in the game.
“It was a high-paced game,” said Detmer, whose team improved to 10-5-1, 4-0-1.”There was a lot of emotion out there and I think both teams lacked execution because the game was going 100 miles an hour. I thought we were split when you looked at the scores and the talent. They worked hard, extremely hard, but I think we worked a tad bit harder.”
