WAYNESVILLE — Normally, when a basketball game is all but over, the losing team’s student section belts out “Let’s play football!” as a saving-face reminder of who won that game in the fall.

But with 1:30 left in Waynesville’s game with Carlisle on Friday — and with the Spartans holding a commanding 15-point lead — it was the Waynesville student section that let those words fly.

Yes, it’s been a good year for the Spartans.

Waynesville, coming off its league football title and playoff appearance, seems ready for another postseason run in boys basketball.

The Spartans hit enough 3-pointers to pull away from the Indians 65-45 on Friday, capping another Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division title with an 11-1 season (17-2 overall).

“It was good team basketball there at the end,” Waynesville senior forward Victor Boggs said of a balanced offense that saw eight players score. “Our goal is to get to district. I know we can do it.”

They got there last season before falling to state champion Cincinnati Taft 108-75 in the Division III district final. The district appearance was the program’s first since the 2002-03 season.

“Last year was a tough game, and I think we’ve got the talent to go even further, go to state and win that big game,” said Boggs, who on Friday provided toughness inside with a game-high 16 points.

Senior teammates Luke Creditt (15 points) and Stephen Jeffries (13) had six of the Spartans’ eight 3-pointers with unconscious range. Senior Tyler Ledford and sophomore Eli Rains also have deep-range ability, while 6-foot-6 senior Jake Elton teams with the 6-6 Boggs for the inside presence.

“Defense is what makes us go,” said Waynesville coach Todd Cook, who let players shave off his buzz cut after the game in the gym as a reward for winning the league. “But we do like the 3. Any time (Creditt) comes across half-court, they have to guard him because you never know.”

As for Carlisle, the Indians (12-8, 7-5 SWBL) enter the sectional tournament on a four-game losing streak, second of the season.

Sophomore Andrew Goodpaster scored 12 points and seniors Michael Kruse and Jon Back both added 11 for the Indians.
