WEST CARROLLTON — This time West Carrollton didn’t let one get away.

The Pirates were impressive Friday night as they won their first boys high school basketball game 57-35 over Bellbrook. Both teams are 1-2.

West Carrollton hit 9 of 11 shots in the first quarter with no turnovers to lead 21-8. That margin grew to 35-16 at halftime.

But there was never a feeling of being in control. They had similar strong start Tuesday, leading Carroll 22-7, yet lost 49-45.

“We stayed intense the whole game,” said junior Connor Myslowski who scored 26 points — 18 in the first half. “Our half-court was a lot sharper than against Carroll. All of us found the open man, set better screens and picks and didn’t take many bad shots.”

Myslowski, a 6-foot-4 junior, was 10-for-13 shooting along with six rebounds and five assists. His shooting was more disciplined than in losses to Fairborn (5 of 13 shooting, 2 of 10 in 3-pointers) and Carroll (3 of 14 including eight straight misses, 2 of 9 on threes).

“Our coaches had us come in early Thursday morning and go through some offensive drills and talked about shot selection,” Myslowski said. “They got their message across.”

Drew Layton added 13 points for the Pirates.

“We played pretty well,” said Pirates coach Dan Gerhard. “We got after them on defense, dictated the tempo on offense and made a lot of good decisions.”

And he didn’t have to say anything about going on cruise control after building a big lead.

Josh Easter had 12 points for Bellbrook, which went almost five minutes in the second quarter without scoring.

“You know it’s not your night when they put in two prayer 3-pointers at the end of the first quarter (Myslowski from 35 feet) and at the half (Randy Stites from 40 feet),” Bellbrook coach Perry Caldwell said. “We’re a real young team so we’re going to struggle for a while.”
