Dayton Demonz coach Marc LeFebvre can’t remember the last time he has seen anything like this season’s squad.
And it goes way beyond the Demonz finishing the first half 20-2-3 and in first place in the Federal Hockey League by 11 points over defending champ Williamsport.
“This team goes into every game knowing they are going to win,” LeFebrve said. “If they are down one or two goals going into the third period, they don’t panic. Usually, if a team gets down one or two goals, all hell breaks loose and players start pointing fingers at each other. These guys don’t do that, everyone stays calm and doesn’t panic.”
All of Dayton’s first-half losses have been by one goal.
“We easily could have won the games we lost,” LeFebvre said. “But we don’t want to get too complacent the second half of the season. That’s what matters the most. If there are changes that need to be made, I’m not going to be afraid to do it.”
All-Star shine: When LeFebvre’s charges return to Hara Arena tonight, they will do it with the winning coach from the FHL All-Star Game at the helm.
LeFebvre was chosen by the players to coach the All-Star team against defending champ Williamsport. The game, held Wednesday in Williamsport, Pa., resulted in a 18-13 win by the All-Star team.
“It was a neat experience,” LeFebvre said. “I was really honored to be selected.”
The championship team hosts the All-Star Game the following season and LeFebvre believes Hara would be a great spot for it next year.
“Dayton would be a perfect spot for it,” LeFebvre said. “I think we have the best arena in the league and it would be a nice little event for us to have.”
Rotating roster: Dayton lost Brayden Metz for a game to Fort Wayne of the East Coast Hockey League, Ryan Ramage to the MS Surge of the SPHL and Gerry Festa to the Bloomington Blaze of the Central Hockey League.
“We are looking for other options, but we are still winning,” LeFebvre said. “It is just pieces of the puzzle falling in the right place.”
LeFebrve sees the call-ups as a good sign.
“It shows we are doing things right as an organization,” LeFebvre said. “But it is a nightmare for me because I have to go out and find another piece of the puzzle.”
Home for a change: The Demonz kick off a three-game homestand tonight at Hara against New York. Williamsport follows New York in on Sunday.
Dayton plays seven of its next 10 games at Hara and finishes the season with 19 games at home.
“That is going to be nice because I know we are all getting tired of the bus,” LeFebvre said. “Our fans have been great so far and it will be nice to share victories with them.”
It will also be nice to do one more thing for a long stretch.
“The guys will be happy they get a chance to sleep in their own bed,” LeFebvre said with a laugh.
