Troy Holtrey’s long tenure as the boys head basketball coach at Springboro High School apparently has ended.
A former school board president said that Holtrey was told last week that his annual supplemental coaching contract would not be renewed after 21 mostly successful seasons.
A special school board meeting will be held tonight at 7 at the high school. Former board president Craig Colston said the meeting will likely draw former players and parents who will speak on behalf of Holtrey. However, when asked about Holtrey, current school board president Scott Anderson said, “This topic is not on the agenda.”
“This is absurd, but it’s how the school board runs the show,” said Colston, who resigned as the board president in May 2010 citing, among other things, a division of the board.
“It’s a big fiasco. It’s a 100 percent witch hunt.”
Holtrey was unavailable for comment. Springboro athletic director Rick Creager confirmed that Holtrey’s coaching contract was not being renewed, but that he was free to reapply for the coaching position.
Both Creager and Colston said that Holtrey’s teaching position at the high school would not be affected.
Holtrey has been the Panthers’ head coach the past 21 seasons. His teams have won 14 league titles, mostly in the now defunct Mid-Miami League.
Under Holtrey, Springboro joined the Greater Western Ohio Conference South Division in the 2006-07 season. The Panthers have won outright or shared conference titles the last four seasons.
Springboro (19-5) was No. 1 in the Dayton Daily News Division I rankings for much of last season. Fueled by 6-foot-10 junior center Maverick Morgan, the Panthers advanced to a district championship.
Led by the Doliboa brothers, Cain and Seth, Springboro posted consecutive 20-0 regular seasons in 1997-98 and 1998-99. Holtrey was the Associated Press state Division II co-coach of the year in 1999.
All coaching contracts in Ohio are one-year supplemental deals that are annually reviewed. While it’s not unusual for a school district to part with a veteran coach, it usually isn’t this late in the summer. The new school year begins in three weeks.
Last spring the Centerville school board did not renew the contract of longtime boys varsity basketball coach Jim Staley.
