Miamisburg’s Goins joins USAC legends in DARF hall

By Greg Billing

From turning wrenches on Winston Cup and Busch Series cars to his brief racing career, Miamisburg’s Marvin Goins has almost done it all when it comes to racing. Almost.

“Probably the only thing I haven’t done is be a flagman. I’ve asked a few people but they haven’t responded,” Goins said with a chuckle.

On Tuesday, Goins adds another item to his racing resume: Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club Hall of Famer. Goins joins USAC legends Mel Kenyon and Tom Bigelow, USAC official Russ Clendenen, owner and mechanic Bill “Pappy” Lewis and track announcer/TV sports anchor Omar Williams. The six newest additions to the DARF hall will be honored at Celebrations II Banquet Center on Poe Avenue in Vandalia. Doors open at 7 p.m. The ceremony is open to the public.

Goins has a connection to the other five inducutees. He worked on cars that competed against Bigelow, often watched Kenyon in action, knew Lewis (who Goins called one of the area’s best car builders and mechanics), met Williams a few times and knew Clendenen from attending USAC shows.

“It’s an honor to go in with some of my heroes,” he said.

Goins said he attended his first DARF meeting in 1971 after Dayton driver Dick Freeman took him to a Promoters’ Night meeting. He joined in 1973 and has been a DARF fixture ever since.

“I was born into a racing family and I’ve been to the race track ever since I was born,” Goins said. “I was born in 1949 and I probably went to my first race in May or June or whenever the first race was at Dayton Speedway in 1950. I was raised at Dayton Speedway. My dad and my uncles all raced and that’s just what we’d done.”

Goins drove mini-stocks and legends cars for about four years before he became more known for turning wrenches than steering wheels. In the early 1980s, he worked on Winston Cup cars driven by Ricky Rudd and Dick Brooks and owned by Nelson Malloch, and also in the Busch Series.

“It’s an honor to be involved in it,” Goins said of joining the fifth DARF Hall of Fame class. “It’s a pretty good honor and I’m proud to be part of it.”
