Prelude off Eldora’s schedule for 2013, could return in ‘14

The Prelude to the Dream is gone from Eldora Speedway’s 2013 racing schedule. But the track could be hosting NASCAR drivers for another event.

Track owner and three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart addressed speculation that NASCAR is considering running a Truck Series event on Eldora’s half-mile, high-banked oval next season.

“The rumor about the Trucks, trust me I would be ecstatic if we could get any NASCAR race at Eldora. That would be great,” Stewart said during a press conference at Kansas Speedway on Friday. “I have talked to NASCAR they have been looking at all kinds of different tracks. It has been brought up in conversation but that is about as far as it has come right now.”

The Prelude could return in 2014, but a format change to the Dirt Late Model Dream prevented the charity race from running next season. The Prelude ran on the Wednesday before the Dream, a Friday and Saturday show in past seasons. But next season Eldora kicks off the Dream on a Thursday with 25-lap features.

“The Prelude takes a ton of work to put on,” Stewart said. “We are trying to focus on (the Dream) a little bit more and some changes that we think are going to be better for our late model race. We just needed to take a year off while we focus on that and make sure that we don’t get overloaded.

“We have intentions of bringing (the Prelude) back. Like I said, we are just changing the format with the Dream next year so we want to make sure we have enough resources to focus on that. It made it a little bit harder to try to put the Prelude on the same weekend.”

The Prelude features professional drivers mostly from NASCAR’s three major series, IndyCar and NHRA competing in dirt late models.

Next season, Eldora will host the Dream on June 6-8 and the World 100 on Sept. 5-7.

Stewart also addressed his World of Outlaws winged sprint car team, saying both Donny Schatz and Steve Kinser will return to drive for him next season.

“Still got Donny and Steve on board for next year and real excited about that,” Stewart said. “I’m really proud of both of them. We had a one-two finish a couple of weeks ago with Steve winning. I’m really excited to have our same lineup back next year.”
