New York City point guard likes what UD offers

By Doug Harris

Dayshon “Scoochie” Smith feels he’s still a long way from making a decision about what college to attend, but plenty of schools have already made up their minds about him.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound senior, who made an official visit to the University of Dayton on Sept. 22-23, already has 19 scholarship offers, according to Rivals.com. Smith has cracked the recruiting site’s top-150 players nationally at No. 121 and is rated as the 28th-best point guard in the 2013 class.

The New York City native said he bonded during his UD trip with senior point guard Kevin Dillard, and Flyer coach Archie Miller is trying to persuade Smith to take a shot at running the show for the Flyers once Dillard graduates.

“He’s telling me I could come in and be the focal point right away, pretty much like a few other schools have. It makes me feel wanted — a lot,” Smith said.

After his New York City high school shut its doors, Smith transferred to Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut and averaged 17 points and six assists last season. He has offers from Illinois, Penn State, Wichita State, Duquesne, Rhode Island and Richmond, according to Rivals.com. He made a visit to Duquense last week.

Asked to describe his style of play, he replied: “I’m an all-around versatile player that will do whatever it takes to win.”

He said he enjoyed his visit to UD but isn’t in a hurry to make a verbal commitment.

“I’m wide open,” he said, adding that an opportunity for immediate playing time is the top priority for him.

One scouting service said of Smith: “Scoochie’s a high IQ player who knows how to run a club efficiently. He attacks with the bounce and looks to use his court vision to create for teammates. But what makes Smith such a dangerous back-court player is that he also has high-level scoring ability from the point.

“He also uses the dribble to the basket. … As he tightens up his pull-up game and gets stronger, allowing him to play through more contact, Smith’s scoring ability will continue to blossom.”
