KETTERING —
Dunbar missed four free throws in the final 32 seconds and Jaaron Simmons hit a runner with :09.6 left as Alter stunned Dunbar 60-59 in a boys high school basketball Division II regional final at Fairmont’s Trent Arena on Saturday.
Alter (21-5) keeps the coach Joe Petrocelli retirement tour going by heading to its ninth state tournament and first since 2003.
Alter advances to the D-II state semifinals at OSU’s Schottenstein Center at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday vs. Columbus Watterson (26-1), which defeated Lima Bath 57-47 in Saturday’s regional final at Bowling Green.
Alter led by as many as 17 in the first half, but Dunbar stormed back to take a 59-58 lead with 1:04 left. The Wolverines’ missed free throws set up Simmons’ dramatic game-winner.
Simmons finished with a game-high 26 points. William Green led Dunbar with 25 points.
Dunbar, the defending D-Ii state champ, finishes 21-7.
