Springboro brothers finally go head-to-head

By BJ Bethel

Brothers Antoin and Jalen Campbell played football together at Springboro High School, where the two contributed to one of the better programs in the Greater Western Ohio Conference South Division.

But the brothers were separated by two years, which meant they didn’t see the field much together. They were also on the same side of the ball — offense — which meant the two had never gone head-to-head.

That changed this year. The brothers Campbell are playing football at the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind. Younger brother Jalen, a red-shirt freshman, was playing cornerback while Antoin, a red-shirt sophomore, was at running back — which set the set the stage for the two brothers to face off in practice.

“It’s kind of funny going at him,” older brother Antoin said. “In high school, we were both on offense, but now we’ve had a couple encounters in practice and it’s been fun.”

Jalen said: “One time on the goal line, I came up and got him on the 1 (yard line). We hit pretty hard. Everyone on the team was excited, because they knew we were brothers. I won, but he likes to say he didn’t hit me that hard. We kind of butt heads on that one all the time.”

While Antoin may find his matchup with his younger brother up to debate, there is no debating his impact on the field for St. Francis. Antoin rushed 228 times in 2012 for 1,204 yards and 11 touchdowns. He began the season carrying 10 times for 116 yards and three touchdowns against Texas College, the highlight a 72-yard touchdown run. He ran for over 100 yards in five of the first six games of the season, including 141 against eventual NAIA national champion Marian (Ind.).

As a freshman, he had rushed 120 times for 636 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Antoin was an important cog in the St. Francis pistol offense, a system that was new to him when he arrived.

“At first it was weird because I never ran it in high school,” Antoin said. “But the linebackers can’t get a quick read on you because they can’t see you lined up behind the quarterback.”

St. Francis went 9-3 and lost in the second round of the playoffs to Marian 45-34.

While Antoin was on the field contributing, Jalen had to adjust to a year without playing as a red-shirt.

“It wasn’t bad,” Jalen said. “I understood that I still have four years to do something and I have a lot of time to grow. I use it as a positive.”

Antoin is a double-major in political science and legal studies. Jalen is majoring in business administration with an eye on a career in sports management. If they have their way, they may not be the only two Campbells at St. Francis. Younger brother Aaron is a junior wide receiver at Springboro.

“He didn’t play much last year, but we’ll see how it goes,” Antoin said. “It would be cool if he came here.”

Glover gets playing time: Briana Glover (Mason) has started two games for the Xavier University women’s basketball team this season. She is averaging 3.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. She had eight points and six rebounds in a 71-67 loss to Butler on Jan. 17.

Bowers capitalizing at Capital: Dustin Bowers (Ben Logan) is a freshman linebacker on the Capital University football team. He had one interception for 12 yards and played in eight games in his first year at the school.
