How to find 'special treats' for fantasy owners

By Jimmy Dinsmore

Here on Halloween, fantasy owners are hoping for a lot more tricks than treats. There’s plenty of treats to be found throughout the league; some are on the waiver wire, some may be hidden on your bench and some may be on another owner’s team. Either way, let’s go through the fantasy goodie bag, so to speak, and see if we can separate the candy from the raisins.

Fantasy trend: Did anyone think Peyton Manning was really done? I sure didn’t. In Denver, he looks like his old self, and there are huge fantasy ramifications from the Broncos success. Willis McGahee is a legitimate RB2 and flex play option. No one is paying him any attention, and McGahee is taking full advantage of soft run defenses. Obviously Demaryius Thomas is a fantasy stud, but so is Eric Decker. Both Broncos receivers deserve a start every week.

Fantasy mirage: Jamaal Charles touched the ball five times last week. No one, not even the Chiefs’ head coach, can explain why. So, expect Charles to be fully integrated into the offensive schemes against division rival San Diego this week. No worries. I promise. Charles is too good to be forgotten.

Fantasy scrap heap: There are two players I absolutely love on the waiver wire this week. One has nice value right now (as well as long-term value) and the other has great long-term value as a keeper. Cecil Shorts is a starting receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Big deal, you say? He has had double-digit targets in the last two weeks, and double-digit fantasy points. Nick Foles will be the Eagles quarterback at some point. Mike Vick eventually will get benched or injured. When that happens, the Eagles’ QB of the future plays. Grab Foles, and wait for the investment to pay off.

Fantasy garbage: Robert Meachem is showing why his numbers in New Orleans were a fantasy mirage. Now that he’s in San Diego, he is simply not worth a roster spot. Drop him and grab Shorts, or Ryan Broyles from Detroit, and don’t think twice about it.

Fantasy frustration: There’s a good reason why #FireNorv was trending on Twitter. Norv Turner is the new Mike Shanahan when it comes to fantasy football. Turner’s inept handling of the Chargers offense is fantasy death to players like Philip Rivers, Ryan Matthews and Antonio Gates. To see fantasy studs like these relegated to irrelevance makes me sad. But no member of the Charger offense can be counted on for consistency at this point. Play them at your own risk.

Fantasy elation: Matthew Stafford owners are elated, or frustrated if they didn’t play him last week. Panicky owners were starting to question the Lions QB as a legitimate starter. But, note that only three other QBs have more passing attempts than Stafford. So be patient. The touchdowns will come and it seems like the Lions have found their groove with the emergence of Broyles and Titus Young.

Final snap: Right now is the time to make trades in your league. But, before making a move, always follow this little bit of advice. Are you getting the best player in the deal? I always want to be the owner who receives the best player in the deal. And, lastly, don’t make a trade out of a one-week desperation to cover for a bye or an injury. That’s never a good idea.
