UD freshman’s header in OT upends Boston

DAYTON —

Asked to describe the biggest goal in her soccer career, University of Dayton’s Ashley Campbell admits the details surrounding her game-winning header are a bit hazy. Hopefully, the Flyers freshman can catch the highlights on television.

In a game televised by the Fox Soccer Channel — and played in front of a record crowd at Baujan Field — Campbell soared above Boston University’s defense to give the Flyers a 2-1 win in double overtime on Thursday. The score was set up by Juliana Libertin’s corner kick and also headed by teammate Sarah Senoyuit in a bang-bang play in front of the Terriers’ net.

“It’s all a blur,” Campbell said following her second goal this season.

The Flyers and Terriers put on a good show for 90 minutes of regulation, then battled for another 9:20 in overtime in front of an energetic UD student section that accounted for many of the 2,763 spectators. That topped the previous high of 2,137 for a men’s game against Xavier on Nov. 5, 2011. The previous high for a women’s game was 1,674 when UD beat UMass to win the Atlantic 10 Championship on Nov. 6, 2011.

“I couldn’t have told you how many people were here but the atmosphere was fantastic,” UD coach Mike Tucker said following the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Game of the Week. “We’re honored to have this game and I think we put on a good show.”

With wins like that the Flyers might be candidates for a few more. Boston (2-1-0) entered the game No. 19 in the NSCAA rankings. Dayton (2-1-0) received votes to land at No. 39. But this one didn’t feel like an upset.

“If we play (Boston) 10 times we might end up 5-5,” Tucker said. “We feel on this field we we are favored versus anybody we play.”

Dayton struck first just 2:32 into the game. Senior Alysha Mallon’s corner kick went untouched and bent inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.

The Flyers’ defense then held the Terriers in check. BU didnt’ get off a shot in the first 41:06 of the game and trailed 1-0 at the half. The Terriers tied it in the 67th minute on Emma Clark’s shot from 30 yards out that went high into the corner of the far post, just eluding the outstretched hands of keeper Jordin Melchert.

Playing even in overtime, Campbell finally delivered.

“Athletically, she is so quick and fast. She’s going to be a special player for sure,” Tucker said. “I know she made me feel better.”

Dayton outshot BU 21-12 overall and 9-6 with shots on goal. Melchert, a junior, made five saves.
